Abstract

Tissue conditioners are soft, resilient, temporary relining materials which by reducing and evenly distributing stresses on the mucosa of the basal seat, have a rehabilitating effect on unhealthy tissue and allow reversable conditions to return to normal states of health -Clinically, they are used for the following purpose.
(1) as tissue conditioners that, when placed in a denture against edematcus tissues, aid the tissues to return to a healthy states,
(2) as temporary relines to maintain the fit of the denture and prevent trauma following immediate denture placement or other oral surgery,
(3) to secure functonal impressions,
(4) for trial evaluation of border extension. The "tissue conditioners", when used judiciously, and in conjulutiotl with sound dental prosthetic principle, can be an invaluable tool for the average dentist. However, too much credit must not be given to the tissue treatment materials for their ability to rejuvenate traumatized oral tissue.
The results wcrc as follows:
(1) Tissue conditioner must be remembered that, in order_ to use these materials of f ectively for tissue conditioning, a thickness c _ inn or more is needed.
(2) A new application of the material is necessary every three to four days until the tissues have recovered.
(3) The misuse of these materials can cause as much tissue irritation as any other ill-fitting denture.
(4) When tissue conditioner gels are immersed in water, they undergo two concurrent processes; leaching out of ethanol into the water and sorption of water by the polymeric phase of the gel in instances when the original material has a high ethanol concentration this results in weight loss and shrinkage because of a weak gel structure, exhibits unstable behabior with prolonged immersion in water.
(5)If left beyond 60 minutes, accuracy of reproducing detail may be diminished and any free standing material, such as on a border, will begin to slump.
